as lawmakers continue to scramble to get a fiscal cliff deal done. rich edson has the latest. rich: they are considering legislation here in the senate today. president obama says he called to talk to congressional leaders, democrats and republicans, last evening. there is no progress here to report. president obama put it all on the house. >> they are operating without the house of representatives. it is being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker, not allowing the vast majority to get what they want. if the 250 would be brought up, it would pass overwhelmingly speaking that 250 he is discussing that would keep tax rates where they are for income amount for less than $250,000 increased those earning more. house speaker says senator reed should talk less and legislate more. senate democrats have not. they want to extend all the current tax rates and avoid some of the spending cuts. democrats are on their opening offer. they basically have not moved anywhere. there is less than a week to go. >> senator reid talking about a less than $250,000 limit. speaking right. exactly. liz

security will now go up to 6.2% of your salary. lawmakers have been so consumed by the fiscal cliff that it appears little was done to extend the 2010 payroll tax cuts, put in place by president obama two years ago in order to boost the economy. so what does it mean to your wallet? here is how much less you'll bring home if it expires. paychecks shrink $50 a month for those earning $30,000 a year. it shrinks $83 a month for those earning $50,000 a year. and $167 a month for those earning $100,000 a year. now, let's switch to the fiscal cliff. and what that is going to cost you. without a deal, you'll be paying lots more in tachxes. say you're single and working hard, you don't have kids, you earn $80,000 a year. if it does not go into effect, you'll pay an additional $3,000 more than what you already pay in taxes. the middle class families will get hit harder, two kids, both parents work. together you earn $80,000 a year. guess what, if there is no deal, you would owe $6,000 more in taxes next year. with so many variables, the question is how is wall street reacting? the stock marke

as good a job of letting the american people know about the medicare fiscal cliff as he has done in persuading the american people that it's a good idea to tax the rich. senator corker has done some good work over the last several months in a variety of areas on the fiscal matters. but a proposal of his has subtracted my support in which he will subscribe today is a proposal to help make the medicare program solvent by reducing the growth of out of control spending by nearly a trillion dollars in exchange for the request for the president for a 1 trillion over increase in the debt limit. taking these provisions together over the next few weeks would provide certainty for the economy and would be the linchpin for the budget agreement that would get the economy going again. republicans have said and the two of us have said we are ready to do a whole variety of things to get a budget agreement, but we have to have someone address the medicare fiscal cliff for the seniors and soon thereafter young americans are going to be pushed over the cliff and they are going to look back at us a

, but the reality is that talks are largely deadlocked over the fiscal cliff. there have been a few conversations going on at the staff level but really the expectation is that the hard work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas holiday, a little bit later on this week. that's when they're going to resume negotiations in earnest. of course there had been hopes that the president and house speaker john boehner were going to get a deal done. if you looked at the beginning of last week, they were getting close to a deal it appeared but that fell apart and talks fell apart. president obama said i will accept a smaller deal as long as it doesn't allow rates for those to go up for those making $250,000 or less. over the weekend you had a few senators, including senator joe lieberman saying they believe now more than ever we may be getting closer to actually going over the fiscal cliff. that is of course hanging over the heads of a lot of americans as they enter this holiday season and also looming over this vacation the president is having. i'll give you a little
